About The Position

The Technician, Composites and TPS (Thermal Protection Systems) role at Blue Origin involves supporting laboratory efforts in research, development, and quality assurance testing for spaceflight systems. The position is part of the Enterprise Program Management team, focusing on providing technical standards and expertise for product engineering and manufacturing. The technician will work with a diverse team to develop materials essential for thermal protection in space vehicles, requiring flexibility, eagerness to learn, and a commitment to quality and safety in human spaceflight.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of laboratory support in a composite environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Experience in creating and executing industry standard material allowables testing.
  • Conduct quality assurance material testing on Process Verification parts.
  • Experience in material cure cycle development.
  • Ability to operate specialized equipment such as large vacuum ovens and inspection cameras.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in bonding and materials testing including surface preparation and application of silicones/epoxies.
  • Experience in machining/trimming composite and metallic materials.
  • Proficiency in common computer tools such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform under critical situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with flight integration and managing high-temperature inert gas/vacuum furnaces.
  • Familiarity with Data Acquisition Systems.
  • Knowledge of composite prepreg materials and layup schedules.
  • Familiarity with ASTM standards and various material test protocols.
  • A bachelor's degree in Materials Science or equivalent experience.
  • Aerospace experience and knowledge of 5-S methodology.
  • Experience with AS9100 standards.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Thermal Protection Systems and Composites laboratories.
  • Assist with sample preparation and operate laboratory instruments.
  • Interact with colleagues and customers to facilitate laboratory efforts.
  • Lead projects as needed and apply technical expertise to laboratory tasks.
  • Conduct quality assurance material testing on Process Verification parts.
  • Develop and execute test procedures related to integrated structural verification tests.
  • Operate specialized equipment such as vacuum ovens, resin transfer systems, and CNC routers.
  • Order materials according to user needs and budget constraints.
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships within the team.
