About The Position

The Surgical Veterinary Technician I position at Charles River's Insourcing Solutions team involves assisting in the daily operations of the surgical program at Boston Children's Hospital. Requirements

  • Associate's degree in veterinary technology or equivalent program with a minimum of 6 months of animal handling experience and 6 months of veterinary technical skills.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills for collaboration with faculty and research personnel.
  • Proof of current vaccinations for COVID-19 and Influenza.
  • Proficient computer skills, particularly in MS Office suite.

Nice To Haves

  • AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) or higher within 1 year.
  • CVT/RVT licensure.
  • Experience with database and record keeping of laboratory animal operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the day-to-day operations of the surgical program alongside the Veterinarian.
  • Coordinate and process orders for animal medications and maintain proper documentation records.
  • Maintain pharmacy and complete scheduled audits including inventory and expiration dates.
  • Work with researchers on pre-study designs and ensure compliance for new projects.
  • Order and maintain diagnostic equipment for the surgical program.
  • Maintain policies, procedures, and related databases for the surgical program in collaboration with senior management.
  • Perform routine audits of pharmacy, surgical records, and operational tasks related to the surgical program.
  • Schedule OR cases and ensure preparedness for upcoming surgeries with researchers.
  • Conduct daily health assessments of USDA covered species and maintain associated records.
  • Perform technical functions required by research protocols, including clinical observations and administering medications.
  • Provide support for research staff in animal handling, sample collection, and treatments.
  • Prepare and submit reports, monthly billing summaries, and inventories as requested.
  • Review and comply with all policies related to the animal care program.
  • Care for laboratory animals in accordance with applicable regulations and policies.
  • Provide training for ARCH staff related to animal care and health.
  • Operate equipment and utilize supplies according to safety guidelines and perform general housekeeping.
