About the position
Story Artists at Sony Pictures Animation work closely with the Directors, Producers, and Head of Story to visually represent the narrative of an animation. They translate the script into a series of panels of drawings that plan out the story, action, humor, continuity, and pacing of the film. The artists are responsible for developing storyboards, pitching them to the creative team and executives, and addressing any story or structure problems. They should have strong draftsmanship, design sense, and composition skills, as well as the ability to work in various styles and convey personality, emotion, and movement through their drawings.
Responsibilities
- Develop storyboards that depict the action, camera placement, and acting of sequences
- Draw sketches and detailed storyboard panels
- Pitch storyboards to the director, head of story, crew, and executives
- Generate innovative ideas with performance, action, and humor
- Revise, edit, and modify sketches as needed
- Ensure consistency in the vision and style of the show through execution of action, staging, dialogue, and camera
- Address story and structure problems and improve entertainment value
- Supervise the story team, including conducting interviews, making hiring recommendations, and providing feedback to artists throughout production
- Possess robust draftsmanship with a sense of design, appeal, and composition
- Work on a range of projects and styles, from action to comedy to drama
- Have strong writing skills
- Demonstrate strong character acting sensibilities, conveying personality, emotion, and movement
- Exhibit strong staging, composition, and cinematography skills
- Draw characters and environments on model within the show's style
- Write clear and specific instructions for the animation team.
