As a research engineer for our robotics initiative, you will develop foundational models, and shape the direction of our early-stage robotics efforts at OpenAI. Your expertise will be instrumental in defining our strategy and establishing a strong foundation for future advancements. This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

  • Own and pursue a research agenda to improve model capability and performance.
  • Contribute to the team's efforts through the design, review, and implementation of various technical aspects.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams within the robotics effort and across the broader Research organization.
  • Mentor and support team members, helping them achieve their professional goals and maximize their impact.
  • Have a research background in robotics, multimodal foundational models, scaling laws, and imitation learning or reinforcement learning.
  • Have proven experience managing high-performing teams of research engineers and research scientists.
  • Thrive in ambiguity and adapt to rapidly evolving research and product initiatives.
  • Relocation assistance to new employees.
