About The Position

The Regional Generator Service Technician (RGST) is responsible for the maintenance, repair, inspection, and installation of electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation equipment on Auxiliary Power units that supply emergency power to various production and distribution facilities. This role involves working on systems such as water treatment plants, pumping stations, and SCADA systems, and may require travel outside the home district, including overnight stays.

Requirements

  • Must possess a High School diploma.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's license.
  • Three years as a master Diesel Technician training or one year of training and an EGSA certification.
  • California Department of Drinking Water Distribution Operator II is required within 12 months.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair generators up to 480 VAC/320KW.
  • Understanding of internal combustion engines, diesel technology, magnetic induction, generator components, and theory of generation.
  • Knowledge of AC power factor, reactance, apparent power, real power, and harmonics.
  • Understanding of lubrication systems and their application, exhaust devices, and purpose of their components.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume, and apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints, electrical schematics, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write maintenance reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Nice To Haves

  • EGSA certification is desirable but not required.
  • Strong background in troubleshooting electrical generators, transfer switches, and diesel engines.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance tasks on gensets and auxiliary power units, portable booster pumps, and portable generators.
  • Plan and execute the annual preventive maintenance service as per NFPA 110.
  • Collect engine fluid samples, send to the lab, and file results in the CMMS.
  • Load-test the gensets and document findings.
  • Inspect transfer switches, generators, and engines, collect data, and enter it in the CMMS.
  • Schedule and perform repairs as needed throughout the year.
  • Troubleshoot and repair engines, generators, and transfer switches as needed.
  • Utilize laptop, software, and other instrumentation to troubleshoot gensets or portable booster pumps.
  • Participate in capital projects including pre-construction meetings, job walks, and inspections according to engineering specifications.
  • Communicate with district management and supervisor to coordinate activities with EMTs, contractors, and local management.
  • Research and procure parts for gensets and related asset repairs; investigate replacement parts for discontinued and legacy items.
  • Record all work order activities and job tasks in CMMS (Maximo) including labor hours and work performed comments.
