About The Position

The Phlebotomist at Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center plays a crucial role in supporting the laboratory function by collecting and processing laboratory specimens. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an Accredited Phlebotomy Program
  • At least six months of Phlebotomy experience is preferred
  • National certification preferred
  • Active CPR/First Aid/BLS certification or ability to become certified within 180 days of hire
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish, both written and spoken language
  • Sensitivity to inter-cultural issues
  • Ability to perform clerical work with speed and accuracy
  • Ability to multitask and shift priorities throughout the day while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Initiative and judgment in problem solving
  • Knowledge of and ability to maintain confidentiality regulations
  • Able to make independent decisions based on Center's protocols
  • High level of accuracy with numbers and data, which will become patient records
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, non-verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to develop effective, supportive relationships with staff, students, families and the community
  • Service-oriented with ability to adapt to changing workload and pace

Responsibilities

  • Preparing patients before drawing blood
  • Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process
  • Providing outstanding customer service to all patients
  • Performing specimen collection and processing according to VGMHC quality assurance standards
  • Tracking collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection and maintaining daily tallies of collections performed
  • Obtaining all necessary patient information and ensuring accuracy on all lab orders
  • Using appropriate process of venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups
  • Collecting specimens that are in line with population-specific programming such as Medication-Assisted Treatment and Reproductive Health Program
  • Handling patient specimens in order to provide accurate and timely patient care
  • Working closely with Lab Coordinator to track, order, and stock lab supplies
  • Serving as a resource for staff needing technical assistance on phlebotomy-related work
  • Checking sharps container daily
  • Organizing and maintaining clean work area / clean and disinfect counters
  • Ensuring temperatures controls, cleaning, and maintenance of lab equipment and testing supplies are completed timely and according to schedule
  • Supporting Lab Coordinator and site leadership with performance, maintenance, and proper documentation of lab equipment
  • Filing test results and locating and entering overdue labs
  • Participating in QA/QI activities related to lab operations
  • Contributing to performance reviews for staff cross-trained to lab
  • Maintaining clean and safe environment for both staff and patients
  • Performing other duties as assigned
  • Handling protected health information (PHI) in a manner consistent with HIPAA

  • Starting Rate: $22.22/hr + DOE
