About The Position

The Mycobacteriology/Mycology Laboratory Supervisor at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for overseeing laboratory operations within the Microbiology Unit's Mycobacteriology and Mycology sections. This role involves supervising clinical testing services, ensuring quality assurance, and managing staff while providing technical oversight for various microbiological techniques. The supervisor will also engage in consultation with healthcare professionals and adapt to dynamic public health needs, including surge capacity responses during outbreaks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an accredited institution.
  • Two years of experience in a laboratory, with at least one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
  • Experience with clinical microbiology procedures and results reporting using classical and molecular techniques.
  • Knowledge of CLIA and/or CAP regulations and QA document management.
  • Experience leading, supervising, and/or managing laboratory professionals.

Nice To Haves

  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification
  • Experience working with Mycobacterium tuberculosis in BSL2 and BSL3 laboratory conditions.
  • Experience performing DST for Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • Experience working with medically important yeasts and molds.

Responsibilities

  • Provide onsite laboratory supervision, planning, and coordination for all clinical testing services performed by the NCSLPH Microbiology Unit's Mycobacteriology and Mycology laboratory sections.
  • Supervise Drug Susceptibility Testing (DST) for first-line drugs used to treat Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • Conduct staff training, manage SOPs, and perform competency assessments per regulatory guidelines.
  • Provide technical oversight for classical microbiology techniques and advanced molecular techniques.
  • Maintain responsibility for all diagnostic results generated and subsequent patient reports.
  • Provide laboratory testing consultation and DST alert values to healthcare professionals.
  • Utilize STARLIMS and Qualtrax compliance software for patient information and document management.
  • Coordinate with the North Carolina TB Control group and the Communicable Disease Branch for laboratory responses to outbreaks.
