About The Position

The Meter Reader position at the City of Porterville involves reading water meters to determine service consumption, connecting and disconnecting services, and performing related duties under general supervision. Requirements

• Knowledge of safety procedures to be followed in performance of manual tasks such as bending and lifting.
• Knowledge of meter reading procedures.
• Ability to retain information and read maps to locate addresses.
• Ability to read numbers quickly and accurately and record meter readings.
• Ability to use and/or learn to use computer equipment.
• Ability to detect and record errors and malfunctioning meters.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Ability to use hand tools and perform light manual labor.
• Ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, peers, and the general public.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

Responsibilities

• Reads meters on assigned routes and records readings in a handheld computerized device or meter book.
• Notes and reports malfunctions, checks for water leaks, evidence of tampering, and broken meters; reconciles discrepancies between computer records and physical meters in the field.
• Disconnects and connects customer services by turning meters off/on using a list of delinquent accounts, payments, and new services.
• Assists in the assignment of new meters to routes and updates the sequential order of meters within routes.
• Responsible for input/output to computer; uploads and downloads data to/from handheld meter reading units.
• Coordinates and implements meter reading work assignments and data adjustments between City departments.
• Responds to customer complaints and/or requests for services.

Benefits

• Full-time position with a monthly salary range of $3,435 - $4,191.
