The Medical Office Specialist performs administrative tasks using specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic, or laboratory procedures. Responsibilities include greeting and registering patients in a prompt, pleasant, and helpful manner, checking schedules and organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam/procedure rooms, assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exams, and collecting patient history. The role also involves performing screenings per provider guidelines, assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures, charting, relaying instructions to patients/families, answering calls, and providing pertinent information. Additional tasks include sending/receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, completing forms/requisitions, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics, managing charts to ensure information is completed and accurate, setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocol, and restocking exam/procedure rooms.
