About The Position

The Medical Dosimetrist Trainee position at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is designed for individuals actively participating in a medical dosimetry graduate program. This full-time role involves receiving clinical training while working under the supervision of certified medical dosimetrists. The trainee will develop competencies necessary for medical dosimetry, including patient data acquisition, radiation treatment planning, and quality management for radiation oncology patients.

Requirements

  • Associate degree and at least one year of work experience as a radiation therapist.
  • Registered through ARRT in radiation therapy.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and successfully complete a formal degree-granting medical dosimetry program.
  • Generate clinically optimal treatment plans utilizing knowledge of anatomy, physiology, radiation biology, and oncology.
  • Communicate with the radiation oncologist during the treatment planning process.
  • Maintain a commitment to accuracy, attention to detail, and safety.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills in radiation treatment planning and plan evaluation.
  • Ensure accurate data transfer of patient and treatment plan information to clinical systems.
  • Participate in acquisition of patient data via medical imaging devices or manual methods.
  • Assist in the treatment simulation process and fabrication of ancillary treatment devices.
  • Contour and delineate normal critical structures using different imaging modalities.
  • Perform rigid and deformable image registration for multi-modality image sets.
  • Apply principles of radiation physics in treatment planning, including various techniques like IMRT and VMAT.
  • Accurately perform radiation dose calculations for treatment delivery.
  • Participate in special treatment procedures such as total body irradiation and intra-operative radiation therapy.
  • Assist with quality assurance procedures as directed by a qualified medical physicist.
  • Perform patient-specific radiation measurements as directed by the medical physicist.
  • Assist with brachytherapy procedures including patient setup and treatment planning.
  • Participate in quality management in accordance with departmental policies and national guidelines.
  • Perform routine chart checks per departmental policy.
  • Participate in charge capture and generate documentation for billing.
  • Engage in clinical research for new techniques in radiation therapy.
  • Provide instruction and training to new staff members and trainees.
  • Maintain an atmosphere of caring and support for patients and colleagues.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as directed by supervising medical physicists.
