About The Position

The Maunakea Ranger Support Assistant is a full-time position with the Center for Maunakea Stewardship, located at Halepohaku, Hawai‘i. The role involves providing support services for rangers, including traffic management, vehicle upkeep, ordering supplies, and educating visitors about the cultural and scientific significance of Maunakea. The position requires working long hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and may involve overnight stays at Halepohaku. Employment is contingent on program needs, performance, and funding availability.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
• Six months of experience in customer service, outdoor recreation, or administrative support.
• Knowledge of the cultural, environmental, geological, and scientific importance of Maunakea.
• Ability to communicate interpretive and safety information effectively.
• Valid driver's license and personal driver's insurance.
• Ability to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle on unpaved roads.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working on Maunakea or in high-altitude situations.
• Experience as a lifeguard, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or equivalent.
• Knowledge of key issues concerning the Maunakea CMP and HAR Chapters 20-26.
• Certificates and training in safety-related disciplines.
• Formal training in Hawaiian studies.

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of support services for the rangers including traffic management and vehicle upkeep.
• Order supplies and provide safety information to visitors.
• Assist rangers in conducting tours of University of Hawai'i Managed lands.
• Educate visitors and observatory staff about the significance of Maunakea.
• Maintain and submit a daily log to supervisors.
• Attend training classes and staff meetings as necessary.
