This position is being recruited through the Papa Murphy's International subsidiary of MTY Food Group, a publicly traded company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange ("MTY"). MTY's family of 80+ restaurant brands include mainstays such as Cold Stone Creamery, Famous Dave's, and Papa Murphy's. We are seeking a hands-on Manager of Data Engineering to lead and actively contribute to the development of our enterprise data platform built on Azure Databricks and Microsoft Azure services. This role blends people leadership with deep technical ownership, ensuring the delivery of secure, scalable, and governed data solutions that support enterprise analytics and reporting. You will manage a team of data engineers while remaining directly involved in architecture, pipeline development, and platform optimization in a complex, regulated, enterprise environment.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering, including 2+ years in a hands-on leadership or management role.
  • Strong production experience with Azure Databricks in an enterprise environment.
  • Deep expertise in Apache Spark (PySpark), Delta Lake, and advanced SQL.
  • Experience building data platforms on Microsoft Azure.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Experience with data lakes, data warehouses, and Lakehouse architectures.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams while remaining technically hands-on.

Nice To Haves

  • Databricks certifications (e.g., Databricks Data Engineer Professional or Azure Databricks certifications).
  • Experience with Unity Catalog and enterprise data governance frameworks.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD for data engineering (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions).
  • Infrastructure as Code experience (Terraform, Bicep, ARM templates).
  • Experience supporting large-scale BI and analytics platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain enterprise-scale data pipelines using Azure Databricks, Apache Spark (PySpark), and Delta Lake.
  • Lead the implementation of Lakehouse architecture on Azure, supporting structured, semi-structured, and streaming data.
  • Develop and review production-grade code, setting standards for performance, testing, and maintainability.
  • Optimize Spark workloads for performance and cost efficiency in Azure environments.
  • Implement batch and streaming ingestion using Databricks Auto Loader, Structured Streaming, Azure Event Hubs, and Kafka.
  • Integrate Databricks with core Azure services such as ADLS Gen2, Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Azure Key Vault, and Azure Monitor.
  • Implement enterprise security patterns including Azure AD, Unity Catalog, RBAC, data masking, and row-level security.
  • Partner with Security, Infrastructure, and Governance teams to meet compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Support enterprise BI and reporting tools (e.g., Power BI) with well-modeled, trusted datasets.
  • Manage and mentor a team of data engineers, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development.
  • Balance hands-on technical contribution with effective delegation and coaching.
  • Promote engineering best practices, code reviews, and knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Translate business requirements into scalable data engineering solutions.
  • Contribute to the enterprise data roadmap, platform modernization, and cloud optimization initiatives.
  • Establish SLAs, monitoring, alerting, and incident response for critical data pipelines.
  • Drive documentation, standardization, and continuous improvement across the data engineering function

  • Salary range: $140,000-$160,000. Actual offer may vary from posted hiring range based on location, work experience, and/or education.
