About The Position

The Laboratory Technician in Horticulture at North Orange County Community College District is responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of an instructional laboratory or technical support service center. This role involves performing specialized and technical duties to ensure efficient lab operations, assisting faculty with equipment and materials, preparing instructional materials, maintaining a safe and orderly laboratory environment, and managing inventory of supplies. The technician will also troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on equipment, maintain records related to laboratory operations, and provide training and direction to others as needed. The position requires participation in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within the college community.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of college-level coursework in area of specialization and extensive practical experience in area of specialization.
  • Commitment to diversity and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Extensive knowledge of ornamental horticultural plants including their identification and growth requirements.
  • Experience in plant propagation.
  • Experience in the wholesale/retail nursery industry.
  • Ability to use Excel or equivalent program to keep detailed records and create spreadsheets.
  • Ability to supervise and give instruction to student interns.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment such as EC meters, pH meters, microscopes, and scales.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Associates degree in Horticulture or a related science.
  • Knowledge of urban agriculture growing techniques.
  • Knowledge of/experience with greenhouse operations, irrigation systems, and LED lighting.
  • Knowledge of/experience with aquaponics, hydroponics, and sustainable agriculture.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of an instructional laboratory or technical support service center.
  • Perform specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operations.
  • Assist faculty in the use of a variety of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Prepare and issue materials and equipment for student use; maintain records of materials and equipment used by students.
  • Prepare instructional materials and equipment for faculty demonstration and student use as requested.
  • Maintain laboratory environment in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
  • Order, receive, and store supplies, materials, and equipment; maintain inventories.
  • Troubleshoot, adjust, maintain, and perform minor repairs to equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain various records and reports related to laboratory operations.
  • Assist in the coordination of exhibits or the use of lab facilities.
  • Train and provide work direction to others as directed.
  • Learn and apply emerging technologies and advances as necessary.
