About The Position

We are seeking an R&D Graduate Computer Science Summer Intern. The Securing Top Academic Research Talent at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (START HBCU) Institute is designed to increase research collaborations with HBCUs, and to develop a diverse talent pipeline in STEM. We are interested in attracting candidates from partnering universities and growing collaboration opportunities between HBCUs and Sandia. A key part of this is through offering summer internships to both undergraduate and graduate students to work at Sandia National Laboratories. The START HBCU Institute will hire interns into several critical mission areas. As a Computer Science Intern at Sandia, you will be guided by a technical mentor and work closely with a team of researchers and interns on issues of national significance. You will participate in collaborative research across a wide range of areas in computer science, applied mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modeling, computational science and engineering, parallel computing, computational neuroscience and cognitive science. Possible research areas include advanced computer architectures, systems software, parallel algorithms, programming languages and paradigms, networks, informatics and information sciences, combinatorial mathematics, discrete event simulation, scalable linear and nonlinear solvers, continuous and discrete optimization, uncertainty quantification, statistics, multiscale methods and mathematics, multiphysics modeling, visualization, visual cognition, meshing, cybersecurity, advanced modeling and simulation, human decision modeling, machine learning, brain inspired computing and assessing human performance. Projects may also involve applying computational methods to scientific and engineering applications including shock physics, molecular dynamics, MHD, CFD, electrical systems, MEMS, and climate science. These student internships are for motivated and enthusiastic individuals with excellent communication skills and who have the desire to gain research experience in a highly collaborative research environment. Successful applicants will be exposed to a wide range of computational and/or cognitive research at Sandia and will have a strong project-based research experience working directly with Sandia staff scientists. Opportunities exist at both our Livermore, CA and Albuquerque, NM laboratories' site locations. Students will be expected to work full time onsite for the duration of their internship.
