The Information Technology Specialist 5 - Database Administrator position at the Iowa Department of Administrative Services involves managing and administering application servers and databases that support critical state law enforcement operations. The role requires expertise in complex systems, database management, and application server administration, ensuring the security and seamless operation of various applications.

  • Administer and maintain Oracle WebLogic Application Servers and associated components on Linux and Oracle Database Appliance servers.
  • Oversee migration, installation, and deployment of applications and web services.
  • Configure clusters, managed servers, data sources, and targets for web services deployment using Oracle WebLogic Server and Oracle Enterprise Manager Fusion Middleware Control.
  • Monitor deployed web services to ensure availability and troubleshoot issues by analyzing logs and collaborating with developers and end-users.
  • Maintain and enhance Java-based applications, including the Employee Database Application and the CRIMES database.
  • Configure and administer database jobs and manage Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) servers for critical data transfers.
  • Write SQL queries, stored procedures, and create ad-hoc reports for management analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Manage multiple databases, ensuring data integrity, performance, and security.
  • Support database connectivity issues, including resolving problems with native and ODBC drivers.
  • Install and upgrade Java Development Kits (JDK) on Linux servers to maintain application compatibility.
  • Support the Department of Public Safety's reverse proxy server for secure access to applications.
  • Manage security certificates, including SSL and Java KeyStore (JKS) configurations.
  • Plan and execute backup schedules using EMC Avamar/Data domain Backup and Recovery appliances.
  • Support the maintenance of Oracle cloud agents and monitor server environments using Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control.
  • Coordinate web service exchanges for the Iowa Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) with external partners.
  • Act as a project coordinator for the DCI Lab and other internal teams, ensuring the timely deployment of new services and software enhancements.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts and provide expert guidance to lab personnel and other staff across the department.
  • Serve on an after-hours call-back list for on-call support, resolving issues related to databases, Linux systems, and application servers as needed.
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field, and experience equal to three years of full-time work in IT-related roles.
  • Three years of full-time work experience in operating multi-job computers, installing/maintaining database management systems, and executing technology projects.
  • Certification by an authorized educational institution in an area directly related to computer specialty fields.
  • Six months experience in Linux Server Administration, Oracle System Administration, and Database Management.
  • Experience with Oracle Certified Associate/Oracle Certified Professional certifications.
  • Familiarity with Java Development Kits (JDK) and Oracle Enterprise Manager.
