About The Position

The Family Support Coordinator works directly with tribes of the TCC region, tribal members, tribal staff, and other state agencies to provide and coordinate a wide range of services to assist children, teen parents, and families who are receiving or eligible to receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and who are involved with the state or tribal child protection systems. The incumbent assists Tribes in developing and maintaining local prevention, intervention, and reunification strategies to help families in crisis. The Family Support Coordinator also participates in planning, developing, and conducting ongoing training for tribal and department staff in issues relating to the local provision of family support services to clients. The role adheres to the TCC Ch'eghwtsen' model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion, and empathy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related field of study, OR equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 (ASFA), and the Federal BIA Social Services Regulations as they relate to tribal protection cases.
  • One year of prior case management or counseling experience, including assessing services for children and families.
  • Must have an Alaska Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • One year of experience writing professional documents such as treatment summaries or court reports.
  • Must pass background check pursuant to the State of Alaska Background Check Program and Federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Determines necessary supportive services for ASAP child only cases in tribal custody and works with the family to coordinate relevant services.
  • Keeps ASAP staff apprised of the current tribal court cases.
  • Works closely with the ASAP Program to coordinate services for teen parents.
  • Provides technical support to Tribal & Family Youth Specialists on issues relating to child protection and adoptions.
  • Provides technical support to the ASAP Workforce Development Specialist or Eligibility Specialists regarding children in tribal custody.
  • Attends and provides technical assistance to Tribes during ‘child protection' tribal court proceedings.
  • Assists TFYS in drafting court orders and case plans.
  • Maintains case files, including case notes, court documents, letters, hearing notices, and other correspondence required by BIA Social Services regulations.
  • Assists in maintaining both electronic and manual program databases for the tribal social services' program.
  • Stays current on child welfare laws, Tribal Codes, and applicable policies.
  • Participates in quarterly time studies as a part of the Tribal Title IV-E Pass-Through Agreement.
  • Assists in classroom and teleconference training for TFYS, village-based service providers, and other TCC staff as needed.
  • Travels to villages, periodically, to work on cases.
  • Conducts Home Visits and child welfare checks when requested by a TCC Region Tribe.
  • Conducts supervised visitation with parents and/or safe exchange for unsupervised visits when requested by the Tribe.
  • Engages parents to develop individualized case plans for ‘child protection' tribal court proceedings, when requested by the Tribe.
  • Performs Diligent Relative Searches.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
