About the position
As an Engineering Manager on the API Infra and Shared Services teams at Airbnb, you will be responsible for shaping the vision and technical strategy of the company's cloud native strategy. You will deliver industry-leading solutions that scale with the needs of the production backend, working in partnership with other infrastructure teams. Your role will involve supporting the team in delivering reliable and efficient infrastructure, driving technical decisions, empowering the team to achieve high productivity and simplicity, and managing and mentoring a team of engineers. Additionally, you will stay current on industry trends and contribute to defining the company's engineering culture.
Responsibilities
- Shape the vision, technical strategy, and roadmap for the API Infra and Shared Services teams
- Deliver industry-leading solutions that scale with the needs of the production backend
- Support the team in delivering infrastructure that balances reliability, efficiency, and quality at scale
- Make the infrastructure layer easy to use and configure for developers
- Be conversant in systems design/architecture and make trade-offs
- Own and defend technical decisions and direction for the team
- Partner with tech leads to drive incident resolution and continuous improvement
- Empower the team to achieve productivity, reliability, and simplicity
- Retain, grow, and hire a team of high-performing engineers
- Manage and mentor a team of engineers and be the guardian of the architecture
- Stay current on industry trends and contribute to defining the company's engineering culture
- Provide technical leadership and set technical direction and strategy
- Communicate and collaborate effectively across teams and organizations
- Work with senior leadership to set strategic direction
- Contribute to culture choices and initiatives that impact engineering positively
Requirements
- 3+ years of engineering management experience, with 9+ years of relevant software development industry experience in a fast-paced tech environment
- BS, MS or PhD in CS or related field
- Technical leadership: hands-on experience leading highly technical and senior teams and setting technical direction and strategy
- Strong communication and collaboration skills. Able to work across teams and organizations on technical initiatives
- Able to retain, mentor, grow and hire senior engineers
- Able to effectively work with senior leadership in setting strategic 6+ month direction
- Able to contribute to culture choices and initiatives that positively impact all of engineering
