About The Position

The Eligibility Specialist III is a lead-level position within the Eligibility Specialist series, responsible for performing complex work related to public assistance programs. This role requires advanced technical knowledge and the ability to independently handle specialized duties, including training other staff, conducting eligibility interviews, and ensuring compliance with regulations. The position serves as a subject matter expert and may involve quality control, fraud prevention, and representation in administrative appeals.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of public assistance programs and eligibility regulations.
  • Experience in conducting investigative interviews and information gathering.
  • Ability to lead, direct, and train other eligibility staff.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems and software applications for data entry and analysis.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, with the ability to explain complex rules to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Provides lead direction and/or training to a unit of workers determining eligibility of applicants and recipients for public assistance programs.
  • Performs interactive interviews to elicit eligibility information and verify financial, employment, and personal demographic information.
  • Analyzes financial and eligibility information to determine initial or continuing eligibility for multiple aid programs.
  • Explains regulations, rules, and policies to clients regarding their rights and responsibilities.
  • Ensures accuracy and completion of application and declaration forms.
  • Resolves discrepancies by securing documentation and confirmation from other agencies.
  • Enters and retrieves data from an automated computer system and issues benefits accordingly.
  • Monitors ongoing eligibility by obtaining periodic updates and taking appropriate actions on changes.
  • Organizes and prioritizes caseload/workload to ensure timely processing of case records and documents.
  • Communicates with clients and others regarding eligibility determinations while maintaining confidentiality.
