About The Position

The Educational Sign Language Interpreter plays a crucial role in supporting hearing-impaired students within the CPS hearing-impaired program. This entry-level position involves providing verbatim interpretation of lectures and discussions, assisting teachers, and facilitating communication between students and instructors.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school (or G.E.D. equivalent).
  • Six months previous work experience in an educational setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language.
  • Good knowledge of manual sign language principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of proper English grammar and spelling.
  • Ability to work in an educational environment and with hearing-and-language-impaired students.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain routine records and reports.
  • Good oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Accompany hearing-impaired students to regular classes and provide verbatim interpretation of lectures and discussions.
  • Use speech to interpret responses of hearing-impaired students to instructors and others as necessary.
  • Assist resource teachers in study classes to clarify study notes from classes.
  • Help teachers in the preparation, distribution, and filing of teaching materials.
  • Set up and operate a variety of audio-visual equipment.
  • Operate photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce educational materials.
  • Consult with teachers regarding concerns of individual students.
  • Type and grade examinations and other classroom materials.
