About The Position

The Department Chair of the University Library at Governors State University is a key administrative role responsible for overseeing library operations, faculty evaluations, and budget management. This position requires collaboration with the Dean and other academic units to enhance library services and resources, while also leading initiatives to promote innovative learning environments within the library. The Department Chair is expected to provide leadership in curricular and instructional development, ensuring the library meets the needs of a diverse student body.

Requirements

  • ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library or Information Science.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or in progress ABD; or an additional Masters in a field that is comparable to those offered through GovState.
  • Three years of progressively responsible academic library experience with a minimum of one year of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated management-level experience working with unionized faculty within a collective bargaining environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, analytical, problem solving, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Record of peer reviewed publications.

Responsibilities

  • Regularly meets with and assesses performance and activities of the faculty librarians and deal with any personnel or work issues.
  • Works to constantly update and improve workflow, library coordination with the various academic departments.
  • Works with the Dean on planning for library improvements, new staffing, and other budgetary proposals.
  • Meets regularly with the Dean and other Academic Affairs leadership to plan and discuss current, new, and proposed initiatives.
  • Works to ensure that the library is maintaining currency in research materials.
  • Coordinate and/or facilitate special projects as needed.
  • Attends and participates in meetings as required.
  • May serve as library liaison within a GovState College.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Dean of the University Library.
