About The Position

The Classroom Assistant is responsible for assisting the teaching staff in carrying out a variety of classroom functions that support the needs of the children. The Classroom Assistant will work under the direct supervision of the Center Supervisor-Lead Teacher, who will provide guidance, direction, and conduct performance evaluations.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED with experience working with children.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Customer service and professionalism; maintain tact, courtesy, composure, and flexibility when dealing with a variety of personalities.
  • Must pass required Tribal, State, & Federal Background Checks including fingerprinting, Drug and Alcohol Testing.
  • Provide documentation of TB skin test and current physical prior to hire.
  • Obtain Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) within 24 months of hire date and maintain credential thereafter; in accordance with Head Start Performance Standard requirement.
  • Sign a confidentiality statement with understanding of the penalties for any violations as it pertains to program information.
  • Participate in program activities; staff meetings, program trainings, parent meetings, teacher conferences, and home-visits.
  • Establish trusting relationship with the parents/families with understanding of the needs of children and families.
  • Timely, reliable and consistent attendance, punctuality, dependability, and flexibility are required.
  • Establish positive working relationship and model appropriate behavior with staff, children, families, and public.
  • Monitor Bus rides and assist when transporting children.
  • Provide staff support at various center locations during times of staff shortages.
  • Understanding of program policy and procedures.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., sit, kneel, stand and bend; carry children with both arms, easily move within the classroom, playground and on the bus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teaching staff with all aspects of the classroom functions; component plans, daily activities, scheduled events, and field trips.
  • Work with children and their families to support development toward school readiness.
  • Assist in creating a supportive, healthy, and safe learning environment that benefits each child's intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and aesthetic development.
  • Assist with providing adequate classroom coverage; including actively assisting in supervision of children at all times to ensure child/children safety.
  • Assist in encouraging and modeling positive behaviors of children in the classroom and playground.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining a positive and trusting relationship with the children and their families.
  • Assist in recruitment of children, families, and volunteers for program services.
  • Assist in providing guidance with volunteers to carry out daily assignments.
  • Assist in executing emergency preparedness plan and respond to emergencies that may arise.
  • Perform tasks within the scope of the Standing Rock 0-5 program as assigned.
