About The Position

The Biological Science Assistant (Fisheries Field Assistant) position is a seasonal role with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, focused on conducting field sampling activities for smolt monitoring and comparative survival studies of salmon and steelhead in the lower Grande Ronde River. This position is essential for supporting the agency's mission to protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats.

Requirements

• Possess or be pursuing a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or a related degree in biological/ecological sciences.
• Experience with smolt trap operation and identifying juvenile fish species, especially salmonids.
• Ability to collect and accurately record field data.
• Computer skills for data management and reporting.
• Experience in powerboat operation and obtaining a Boater Education Card.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in field data collection and analysis.
• Knowledge of fish ecology and behavior.
• Familiarity with Oregon's fish and wildlife regulations.

Responsibilities

• Conduct field sampling activities for smolt monitoring and comparative survival studies of salmon and steelhead.
• Operate smolt traps and identify juvenile fish species, particularly salmonids.
• Collect and accurately record field data.
• Utilize computer skills for data management and reporting.
• Operate powerboats as required for fieldwork.
• Perform PIT tagging as part of the monitoring process.
