About The Position

The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) has a potential need for a Biocurator to support our government customer located in Frederick, MD at Fort Detrick. The role involves performing molecular and genomic analysis procedures, particularly in BSL-2 environments, and requires the aggregation, analysis, and interpretation of microbiological, molecular, sequence, and phenotypic data in support of laboratory programs and projects. The Biocurator will utilize bioinformatics applications to support the analysis of laboratory-acquired data and maintain and improve existing Microsoft Access databases for data retention, retrieval, and analysis. Additionally, the position involves developing and applying computer codes for data processing and analysis, preparing technical reports and manuscripts for publication, and providing culture identification and characterization data to support the reference material collection. The role may require CONUS/OCONUS travel for diagnostic missions or scientific presentations, and the Biocurator will also be responsible for training and competency assessing Division Personnel on key laboratory practices, procedures, and techniques.

Requirements

  • MS degree and 10+ years' experience
  • General Molecular Biology Skills: PCR, DNA isolation and purification, Microarrays, DNA Synthesis, and Nucleic acid Sequencing
  • Analytical Chemistry Skills: Protein and nucleic acid separation with High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and electrophoresis, Mass Spectrometry, and DNA synthesis
  • Computer Skills: Multiple Bioinformatics software suites, Basic knowledge in Programming Languages (Java, Perl, SQL, Python)
  • BSL-3 training and experience
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Must pass NACI background check
  • Must be willing to work in a BSL 2 laboratory
  • Must be eligible to enroll in the BPRP and CS-PRP programs.

Responsibilities

  • Performance of molecular and genomic analysis procedures in BSL-2 environments.
  • Aggregate, analyze, and interpret microbiological, molecular, sequence, and phenotypic data.
  • Utilize bioinformatics applications to support the analysis of laboratory-acquired data.
  • Maintain and improve existing Microsoft Access databases for data retention, retrieval, and analysis.
  • Develop and apply computer codes for processing and analysis of laboratory-acquired data.
  • Prepare technical reports and manuscripts for publication.
  • Prepare monthly Biocurator BRMR Progress Reports concerning activities related to these tasks.
  • Provide culture identification and characterization data to support the reference material collection using current microbiological, molecular, and immunodiagnostic assays.
  • Conduct CONUS/OCONUS travel as required for diagnostic missions or scientific presentations.
  • Train and competency assess Division Personnel on key laboratory practices, procedures, and techniques.
