About The Position

The City of Asheville is seeking a qualified Auto Mechanic to join its Fleet Services Division within the Department of Public Works. This role involves performing both routine and complex repairs on City-owned vehicles, ensuring their optimal operation and compliance with safety standards. The Auto Mechanic will work independently and as part of a team, diagnosing and repairing various vehicle systems, and installing aftermarket equipment as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Vocational or technical training in automotive services or a related field.
• Two years of experience in performing preventative maintenance on vehicles, or equivalent education and experience.
• Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Nice To Haves

• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or other certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and complex repairs on vehicles, including diagnostics and troubleshooting.
• Inspect, test, and repair various vehicle systems such as ignition, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
• Install optional and aftermarket equipment on vehicles, including lights and sirens.
• Determine materials required for projects and research specifications and repair methods.
• Conduct state and for-hire vehicle inspections to ensure compliance with regulations.
• Maintain vehicle maintenance logs and records in a computer database.
• Provide guidance and training to Auto Technicians and assist with complex repairs as needed.
• Participate in on-call rotation and perform maintenance activities in the field.
