About the position

The Assistant Special Education / STRIVE position at River Birch Elementary is designed to provide support to the classroom and assist the classroom or resource teacher in achieving student learning objectives as outlined in Individualized Education Plans (IEP). The role involves working with individual students or small groups to help them achieve and maintain the skill levels of the class. Additionally, the assistant will assist with classroom management, implement student-specific behavior plans, and provide for special health care needs.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains schedule as developed by supervising teacher.
  • Works with individual or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Utilizes de-escalation techniques when behaviors and emotions are escalated, at the direction of the teacher.
  • Prepares classroom or learning environment with needed supplies and materials.
  • Accompanies students to general education and special area classes and supports them in those areas.
  • Participates in in-service training program.
  • Assists with lunch, snack, and clean up routines as needed.
  • Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  • Assists with supervision of students during emergency drills.
  • Maintains records and collects data as directed by the teacher.
  • Provides personal care support for and with students as needed.
  • Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
  • Performs other such tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the principal may assign.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Advanced work in special education preferred.
  • Ability to relate well and communicate effectively with a variety of individuals including students, staff, parents, and classroom volunteers.
  • Experience in a classroom setting preferred.
  • No certification is required.
  • Ability to maintain a positive relationship with pupils, staff, parents, and the community.
