About The Position

The University of Hawai'i - West O'ahu (UHWO) seeks an exemplary teacher/scholar for its Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree program with concentration in Early Childhood Education, Pre-K-3. Priority will be given to educators with leadership experience in developing undergraduate curriculum aligned with the professional standards of the discipline, including the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). The UHWO Education Division, accredited by CAEP in 2020, prepares knowledgeable, skillful, responsive educators for a global society. Our teacher education programs prepare candidates who are committed to delivering high quality instruction that addresses the needs of the whole child; embracing social justice and equity for all; and becoming reflective practitioners and life-long learners.

Requirements

  • Earned doctorate in Education, with specialization in Early Childhood Education from a regionally accredited and recognized institution (ABD candidates must earn their doctorate by August 1, 2025)
  • Experience and expertise in Early Childhood Special Education
  • Three (3) or more years of excellent teaching in preschools and K-3 classrooms
  • Commitment to standards-based teacher preparation that is informed by current research and practice in Pre-K-3 instruction
  • Scholarly publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals, refereed presentations at professional conferences, or demonstrated potential to conduct research and publish scholarly works on topics relevant to Pre-K-3 teaching and learning
  • Interest in and evidence of quality service to the profession and community at large
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and the education of culturally and linguistically diverse populations

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in Special Education
  • Successful experience teaching Pre-K-3 inclusion, resource, or self-contained classrooms, in partnership with special educators
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence in culturally and linguistically diverse settings
  • Successful experience developing innovative, technology-based courses for delivery to non-traditional students
  • Knowledge of Hawai'i State and CAEP accreditation standards and procedures
  • Knowledge of and experience working in Professional Development Schools
  • Excellent post-secondary teaching in a regionally accredited teacher preparation program
  • Evidence of a focused scholarly research agenda that informs the candidate's practice
  • Commitment to, knowledge of, and/or experience with the mission and purpose of the University of Hawai'i to position the university as a leading indigenous-serving higher education institution

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of Pre-K & Pre-K-3 licensure pathways
  • Develop and teach undergraduate courses in Early Childhood Education
  • Supervise early field experience, practicum, and student teaching
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with area preschools and K-3 partners
  • Engage in new course development for delivery on campus and via distance methods
  • Conduct scholarly research and creative endeavors, leading to peer-reviewed publications
  • Participate in professional education associations in the candidate's discipline
  • Pursue professional development activities to stay current in the field
  • Actively participate in program development and assessment
  • Provide service to the profession and broader community
  • Advise undergraduate teacher candidates
  • Participate in faculty governance
