About The Position

The City of Wylie's Public Works division is seeking an Assistant Director of Public Works. The selected candidate will oversee planning, design and construction of capital improvement projects; administer engineering consultant and construction contracts. Coordinates with operations and maintenance staff on identification and design of projects and evaluates impacts of development on existing infrastructure. Trains and supervises staff in technical design and inspection functions. Responds to citizen and staff requests and complaints.

Requirements

  • College Degree in Civil Engineering or related field required.
  • Four years of municipal or public works design and/or construction experience required.
  • Registered Professional Engineer.
  • Certified Floodplain Manager.
  • Familiarity with CADD, GIS and various water and wastewater modeling programs desirable.
  • Registration as a professional engineer in Texas or ability to obtain within 6 months required.
  • Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record required.
  • Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management after hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Registration as a professional land surveyor desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees design and construction for capital projects; performs preliminary design calculations; prepares plans, specifications and cost estimates for streets, utilities, and other public infrastructure to ensure compliance with City standards.
  • Oversees consulting engineering contracts; administers construction contracts; oversees the work of Engineering staff and trains in technical design and inspection.
  • Identifies projects from master plans for streets, parks, water, wastewater and storm drainage; identifies need for new projects or for replacement of old systems through coordination and review with operations and maintenance staff and through evaluation of impacts associated with new development.
  • Investigates and responds to citizen inquiries and complaints; reviews development plans for compliance with City standards; coordinates with developers, contractors, and other City staff.
  • Attends City Council and Planning and Zoning Commission meetings; assigns duties, monitors progress, and conducts performance evaluations of staff; prepares budget recommendations.
  • Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers and others.
