About The Position

The Asphalt Shuttle Buggy Operator is a skilled craft position responsible for operating a hot-mix asphalt transfer vehicle on construction projects. This role involves executing paving procedures, performing daily maintenance on equipment, and ensuring safe and efficient operation while working in a team environment. The operator must understand and meet project standards, manage material placement, and maintain equipment in proper working order.

Requirements

  • Demonstrable previous experience as an Asphalt Shuttle Buggy Operator.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to understand work directions and communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift at least 50 pounds frequently, and carry up to 150 pounds with assistance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with hydraulic and electrical systems of the paver.
  • Knowledge of various asphalt mixes and their setup.
  • Ability to calculate spread rates and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and execute paving procedures while following instructions to meet project standards.
  • Follow safe operation of the paver.
  • Set feed sensors and determine the correct placement of materials.
  • Perform daily maintenance including lubrication and fluid level checks.
  • Notify supervisor of any equipment repair needs.
  • Conduct visual safety inspections for leaks and damage before operation.
  • Plan and meet grade cross slope requirements.
  • Place material in front of the screed and set flow appropriately.
  • Operate equipment to maintain a straight line and proper paving speed.
  • Adjust screed crown and strike off as needed.
  • Set up and use automatic grade and slope control systems.
  • Prevent segregation during operation of the paving machine.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment and work area.
  • Perform incidental work items and duties within other crafts.
