About the position
The Art Director is responsible for visually exploring, creating, and designing all aspects of feature animated films, including sets, locations, props, characters, visual effects, color, and overall style. They collaborate closely with directors, producers, and the visual development team to bring their ideas to life through drawings, renderings, paintings, and digital imagery. The Art Director must have a mastery of drawing, design, and digital media, as well as the ability to work in a variety of styles. They should also possess knowledge of color theory, lighting, staging, and perspective, and have experience presenting art and materials to executives and producers for approval.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with directors to visually explore, create, and design all aspects of feature animated film
- Use drawings, sketches, renderings, paintings, and digital imagery to help realize directors' ideas from concept to finished presentation
- Supervise artists, conduct interviews, make hiring recommendations, and provide guidance throughout production
- Develop and communicate a clear design vision for characters, locations, props, backgrounds, visual effects, lighting, and color
- Exhibit mastery of drawing, design, and digital media as it pertains to feature film design
- Work in a variety of styles, from "cartoony" to highly realistic
- Have knowledge of color theory, lighting, staging, and perspective
- Solve problems resourcefully and adaptably
- Plan, schedule, and monitor team progress across all areas of the project
- Present art and materials to executives and producers for approval
- Supervise a design team, delegate tasks, give feedback, and provide guidance.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience as an Art Director in feature film, TV animation, or game design
- Mastery of drawing, design, and digital media
- Comfortable working in a variety of styles, from "cartoony" to highly realistic
- Knowledge of color theory, lighting, staging, and perspective
- Expert problem solver who is resourceful and adaptable
- Ability to plan, schedule, and monitor team progress
- Experience presenting art and materials to executives and producers for approval
- Accomplished at supervising a design team, including delegating, giving feedback, and providing guidance to artists throughout the production
