About the position

The position involves developing in each pupil an appreciation of history and cultural diversity, as well as proficiency in social studies inquiry skills and concepts. The educator will motivate pupils to understand and exercise their rights, privileges, and responsibilities as citizens. Additionally, the role includes fostering an understanding of the geographical, historical, cultural, and political factors that influence the development of world regions, and encouraging pupils to form sound opinions based on factual studies of political and economic systems.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the ministry of the school from a non-denominational Christian faith perspective.
  • Agree with the BCS Statement of Faith, Mission Statement, and Code of Conduct.
  • Teach courses in social studies, history, geography, government, political science, or humanities to secondary pupils.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter.
  • Develop a balanced social studies program involving factual background material, current events, and discussions.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to varying pupil needs.
  • Develop knowledge of governmental and economic systems, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
  • Make current material from mass media available to pupils.
  • Develop an understanding of contributions of racial, religious, and political groups to American culture.
  • Develop knowledge of political and economic systems of other nations and their influence on personal freedom and education.
  • Encourage pupils to be aware of local, state, national, and world problems.
  • Maintain standards of pupil behavior for an orderly classroom environment.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education.
  • Communicate with parents, administrators, and school counselors on pupil progress.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff to solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Participate in faculty committees and sponsor student activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Prepare students for AP exams if required.

Requirements

  • Ability to teach secondary pupils in social studies and related subjects.
  • Strong understanding of citizenship and basic subject matter in social studies.
  • Experience in developing and implementing a balanced social studies program.
  • Ability to provide differentiated instruction for pupils with varying abilities and backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of governmental and economic systems and their implications for citizenship.
  • Familiarity with current events and mass media resources.
  • Understanding of cultural contributions to American society.
  • Knowledge of international political and economic systems.
