About The Position

The Debt Specialist I plays a crucial role in reducing losses for TD by negotiating and collecting payments on delinquent accounts, which may include retail, consumer, residential, or auto loans. This position is essential in maintaining the financial health of the organization by ensuring that payments are collected in a timely manner. The Debt Specialist I is expected to demonstrate proficiency in a variety of processes, procedures, and systems necessary to perform their assigned tasks effectively. They will need to understand how their duties relate to the overall team and how the team integrates with other departments within the organization. In this role, the Debt Specialist I will handle their own workload while coordinating tasks and services with other team members. They will be responsible for recognizing and solving routine problems that may arise in their work area without needing supervisory approval. The specialist will evaluate and select solutions from established options and follow standardized procedures while also recommending opportunities for process improvements based on their observations. A key responsibility of the Debt Specialist I is to determine the reasons for customer delinquencies and utilize standard methods and procedures to secure payments. This includes identifying the type of loan product involved, such as residential mortgages, home equities, or unsecured loans, and modifying their approach accordingly. The specialist will also develop familiarity with debt management counseling to provide necessary information to customers. Additionally, they will serve as the entry point for identifying, routing, and documenting all pertinent collection support processes, including modifications, bankruptcy, and skip-tracing. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, along with the ability to develop strong phone skills for effective customer interaction. Developing negotiation skills is essential to arrive at the best overall solutions within established guidelines. The Debt Specialist I will also need to possess sales abilities to make regular phone calls, present the company positively, and tactfully collect payments. Writing skills are necessary to document calls clearly, and proficiency in PC skills is required to navigate various systems and processes.
