Ask Questions

You always want to ask questions at a job interview. Prepare a few options of things you want to ask the interviewer in advance. Some of your questions might be answered throughout the interview, so have a couple of good options to ask the hiring manager at the end.

Have a mix of questions about the job description and the company. Asking questions will allow you to learn what you want to know about the company. It also shows the interviewer you are dedicated to the process and interested in the role.

If you are worried or nervous you might forget, so bring a few notes to your interview.

Be on time

Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to arrive and check into your job interview. You will want to get to the office at least a few minutes early so you can park and go through any security the company may have. Even arriving a few minutes late to an interview can leave a bad impression. If you can't even show up on time for the interview, why would you be on time for work?

Reference your research on the company

It's a great idea to spend a few minutes on the company's website and social media sites learning as much as you can. When speaking with the interviewer, make sure you reference things you came across on your search so they know you did your homework. You can mention things like recent press releases or specific information on the organization.

Show you have the qualifications for the job

During your interview, show the interviewer you have the skills required to do the job. You know what the employer is looking for from the job description and requirements on the posting, so think about how your background and previous work have made you the right candidate for the job.

You won't be the only person interviewing, so you want to highlight the experience and skills that make you the best of the candidates. Talk about your previous employers and how your background relates to the role. Also, never simply read from your resume or cover letter.

Follow up

Make sure you send a thank-you note to your interviewer. Following up is a great way to leave a good impression. Take some time to write your note so you get across that you are very interested in the company and want to work there.

It's a good idea to send your email on the day of your interview. Get the contact information for all the people you meet with so you can thank each of them.

Dress appropriately

Make sure you look professional for your job interview. Interviewers can be turned off by someone who isn't wearing proper attire. Even if the company is somewhat casual, it's always safer to overdress.

Body language

Pay attention to how you are carrying yourself during your interview. Don't slump into the chair and try to avoid fidgeting. Always make good eye contact with the interviewer, especially when giving answers to a question.

Tell them you want the job

Don't be afraid to tell the hiring manager that you want to work at the company. It's a great way to end your discussion. Remind them of your experience and how you would fit in well.

Provide examples of how you could help better the team. If the interviewer shared goals for the position, share how you would make a plan to achieve them.

What should you not do at a job interview?

Make sure you don't bring bad habits into an interview. Things like, showing up late, being negative, or coming unprepared are common mistakes people make. You do not want to bring up money too soon in the interview process.

There will be a time in later discussions to talk about the matter of salary and other benefits. Use early interviews to really learn about the company and its industry.

Don't bring up things you will need to get the job done until you hear what resources the company has. You also want to avoid getting too personal in an interview. Mentioning things like vacations and your friends if they are not related is generally not a good approach.
