About The Position

The Library Media Specialist will develop and coordinate educational media services. This role involves assisting teachers and students in the effective use of the media center and information technology as a learning resource to support the school's curriculum and to develop students' information literacy skills. The position is responsible for the operation and supervision of the school media center, maintaining a cataloging system, coordinating library skills instruction, assisting teachers with material selection, evaluating and requisitioning new materials, and assisting students with materials and technology. The specialist will also help students develop independent reference work habits and skills, present materials to classes, prepare and administer the media center budget, supervise clerical activities and the media aide, promote external information source relationships, and maintain professional rapport with colleagues and district staff. Additionally, the role includes fulfilling professional responsibilities beyond the classroom, such as participating in co-curricular programs, school and district improvement efforts, community and parent groups, and upholding ethical standards. The position models appropriate personal characteristics and work habits and performs other assigned duties. This position is subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Madison City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by transfer of a qualified applicant already employed by Madison City Schools. No credit toward tenure or non-probationary status is earned in the initial school year if the date of hire occurs after September 30.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. Degree
  • Alabama State Department of Education Teaching Certificate
  • Library Media Specialist Certification
  • Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment needed for the different departments in the school setting.
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment appropriate for effective teaching and learning.
  • Knowledge of school's program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research, technology and theory to the library facility.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to use and manage technology including, but not limited to, e-mail, internet, Microsoft Office Programs, CD-ROMS, DVDS, videos, etc.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policy, and state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Possesses the physical and emotional ability to fulfill the contract period.
  • Background checks must not be more than 10 years old.

Responsibilities

  • Operation and supervision of the school media center.
  • Maintaining a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials and instructing teachers and students on its use.
  • Coordinating library skills instruction with classroom instruction to achieve state curriculum content standards and district educational goals.
  • Collaborating with teachers to integrate information literacy competencies across the curriculum.
  • Assisting teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials and making media center materials available to supplement the instructional program.
  • Evaluating, selecting, and requisitioning new media center materials and informing teachers and other staff of new acquisitions.
  • Assisting students in the use of various types of materials and information technology.
  • Helping students develop habits of independent reference work and skills in using reference material for assignments.
  • Presenting and discussing materials with a class studying a particular topic at the request of the teacher.
  • Preparing and administering the media center budget.
  • Supervising the clerical activities necessary for the effective operation of the media center.
  • Supervising the work performance of the media aide.
  • Promoting relationships with external information sources and participating in electronic networks and resource sharing systems.
  • Establishing and maintaining a professional level of rapport with colleagues, team leaders, department heads, district-level coordinators, program directors, and instructional support and service employees.
  • Fulfilling professional responsibilities beyond the classroom, including participation in school co-curricular programs, school and district program improvement efforts, community and parent groups, and abiding by and promoting high ethical standards.
  • Modeling appropriate personal characteristics and work habits.
  • Performing other duties within the scope of employment and certification as assigned.
