About the position

The Youth Safety Advocate (YSA) position at Covenant House California serves as the first point of contact for young people, staff, donors, and community members. This role requires managing competing priorities while maintaining a positive and engaging attitude towards customer service. The YSA is responsible for answering phone calls, managing visitors, welcoming young people off the streets, and interfacing with community partners. Additionally, the YSA ensures the safety and well-being of residents, staff, and visitors, as well as the physical property of Covenant House California, adhering to the agency's Mission Statement, Five Principles, and Policies and Procedures. The position is classified as non-exempt, requiring 40 hours of work per week on the evening shift from 3:30 PM to 12 AM, with a pay rate of $20.49 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional customer service at all times, including on phone calls and interactions with youth, staff, vendors, and on the CHC paging system.
  • Be the first point of contact with all youth coming into the agency, ensuring proper check-in through metal detectors and personal item checks.
  • Engage in positive interactions with youth, staff, vendors, and guests, while refraining from counseling duties.
  • Monitor the reception desk, answer phones with courtesy, direct callers, and greet residents and guests.
  • Monitor entrance and activity in all buildings through foot patrol and surveillance equipment, reporting unusual activities to management.
  • Perform rounds to ensure the sanctuary is maintained, completing checks as directed by the supervisor.
  • Conduct internal and external checks for safety and maintenance needs, ensuring only appropriate persons access the facility.
  • Assist staff in resolving conflicts, inspecting resident belongings, and using de-escalation techniques as necessary.
  • Maintain an ongoing log of activity throughout the shift, documenting critical incidents appropriately.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management, including back-up coverage.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required; Bachelor's Degree in Human Services or related field preferred.
  • Must have a current California State issued Guard Card or be willing to obtain one.
  • 1-2 years of experience working with homeless or at-risk youth/young adults in a residential setting preferred.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of security procedures.
  • Valid CA driver's license, good driving record, and reliable transportation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a residential setting with at-risk youth.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
