About the position

The Youth Care Specialist position at Youth Opportunity Investments involves providing direct care and supervision to youth in a structured environment. The role focuses on ensuring the safety and well-being of the youth while promoting their personal development through guidance, counseling, and support. The specialist will work closely with a team to create a positive and transformative experience for the youth, helping them achieve independence and success.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a group of 7-10 youth during activities, ensuring their safety and security.
  • Guide and teach youth internal controls needed for responsible living.
  • Comply with procedures on movement, physical security, and reporting.
  • Provide a safe environment using group counseling techniques and crisis intervention as needed.
  • Represent youth's problems and needs to the treatment team and provide progress reports.
  • Conduct problem-solving group meetings and daily reviews with the youth.
  • Assist classroom teachers in delivering subject matter and transferring class content to living units.
  • Promote activity planning and completion by the assigned group of youths.
  • Document daily shift occurrences and conduct frequent population counts as required.
  • Make referrals for special needs or medical evaluation and brief oncoming shifts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; two years of college coursework in social or human service field preferred.
  • Two years' work experience working with youth preferred for those with a high school diploma.
  • Verbal skills to relate effectively with youth on an adult level without patronizing.
  • Group counseling and leadership skills are required.
  • Good analytical skills to distinguish between cause and effect and opinion and fact.
  • Certification in First Aid, CPR, and appropriate crisis intervention methods must be obtained during the probationary period.
  • Proficiency in group work must be demonstrated during probation and remaining employment.
