About the position

The General Manager, reporting to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Vice President for Strategic Communications and Marketing, is responsible for strategic, tactical and budget planning and management; grant, major gift and planned giving revenue generation; personnel management; and Federal Communications Commission (FCC), National Public Radio (NPR), Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) compliance. S/he collaborates with staff to oversee content, operations, facilities, marketing and educational outreach, sponsorship, and membership.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the future and financial and legal health of the organization through strategic planning, budgeting, and fiscal management.
  • Meet DPM revenue goals by overseeing and/or being directly responsible for sponsorship, membership, major gifts, grants, planned giving, in-kind and securing other revenue streams.
  • Guide the work of staff and be responsible for hiring, contracts, training requirements, evaluations and implementing established personnel policies.
  • Oversee station programming, local program production, maintenance and operability of broadcast equipment and the maintenance of the station's facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with FCC regulations, CPB compliance for grant funding, and NPR regulations for membership and programming.
  • Lead marketing efforts to increase listenership and engagement, ensuring responsiveness to a large listening area.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to other organizations involved in public broadcasting and seek collaboration opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in broadcasting, business, or similar education or experience.
  • Minimum five years' experience in public media and/or non-profit management or equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training in related fields.
  • Experience in strategic, tactical planning and budgeting/fiscal management.
  • Demonstrated fundraising ability including securing grants and managing donor/membership programs.
  • Strong people skills and ability to work with a wide variety of people and interests.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public broadcasting or commercial broadcasting, including knowledge of FCC regulations.
  • Knowledge of radio broadcasting, audio production, radio engineering, and/or journalism.
  • Familiarity with public higher education; HBCUs, and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
  • Competence with computers, word-processing, spreadsheets, fundraising software, social media communications, and network management.
  • Experience in facility management including oversight of building maintenance and utilities.
