About the position

The position involves providing counseling services to students at Kettering University, focusing on personal, academic, and career concerns. The counselor will engage in crisis intervention during mental health emergencies and maintain appropriate documentation. The role also includes aiding students in determining long-term mental health support and managing crises on campus. Additionally, the counselor will develop and update knowledge of professional policies related to the consultation process and maintain current knowledge of local resources to assist students. The position requires providing programming for students, faculty, and staff to promote mental health awareness and support students in managing personal challenges, including those with disabilities. The counselor will also support students seeking accommodations for their academic and personal success, ensuring compliance with the ADA.

Responsibilities

  • Provide limited individual and/or group counseling to students to address personal, academic, and career concerns.
  • Engage in crisis intervention to address mental health emergencies and maintain appropriate documentation.
  • Aid students in determining long-term mental health support.
  • Manage mental health crises on campus when they arise.
  • Develop and update knowledge of professional policies associated with the consultation process.
  • Maintain current knowledge of local resources and seek assistance in understanding other resources that could benefit students.
  • Provide programming for students, faculty, and staff to inform them on mental health care.
  • Support students in managing personal challenges and work with students with disabilities.
  • Develop and execute programming for the campus community on mental health awareness, advocacy, and wellness.
  • Provide support to students seeking accommodations for their academic and personal success.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a mental health discipline (counseling, social work, psychology).
  • Current licensure in the State of Michigan with a mental health specialty (LPC, LMFT, MSW, LCP, etc.).
  • Extensive knowledge of human behavior theories and modalities.
  • Knowledge of student development theories and experience working with college-aged students.
  • Training and experience with diverse populations.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records and scheduling systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three or more years of experience in a college counseling setting.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities, including ASD.
