About the position

The position involves various duties related to the weighing and inspection of vehicles and materials in a scrap metal yard. Responsibilities include weighing vehicles both full and empty, inspecting and determining metal grades for inventory tracking, and handling the necessary paperwork for business transactions and government documentation. The role requires effective communication with dispatch, truck drivers, and customers to ensure smooth operations and address any issues that may arise. Additionally, the employee will work collaboratively with other team members to maintain an organized and safe work environment, ensuring that all materials are disposed of properly and that the workspace is kept clean and orderly.

Responsibilities

• Weigh vehicles full and empty to record purchases.
• Inspect and determine metal grade for inventory tracking.
• Handle paperwork associated with conducting business, delivery transactions, and government-required documentation.
• Communicate with dispatch and truck drivers to determine schedules and volumes.
• Communicate with customers when they bring objectionable materials.
• Work with customers to satisfy their needs and assist them when problems arise.
• Collaborate with other employees in the scrap metal yard to ensure swift work when materials arrive.
• Process and report end of day totals.
• Ascend and descend staircases for inspections of loads.
• Adhere to specific dress code for the position.
• Clean up work area at the end of shift.
• Keep work areas neat and orderly.
• Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
• Organize materials for more effective use of space.
• Dispose of various waste materials appropriately.
• Inspect to ensure cleanup is completed.
• Engage in effective housekeeping in the workplace.

Requirements

• Must pass a medical physical and drug test.
• Must pass a background check and credit check.
• Preferred - high school diploma or GED and/or foreign education acceptable.
• Bi-lingual (English & Spanish) language skills a plus.
• Ability to communicate effectively and understand direction (written or oral).
• Basic math skills as the job demands.
• Willingness to learn how to sort metal, identify colors, shapes, and weights, maintain equipment, and utilize PPE.
