About the position

The Water Treatment Operator position at American Water involves skilled work in the operation and maintenance of a water/wastewater treatment facility. The operator is responsible for ensuring that the facility operates in compliance with all state and federal regulatory requirements, performing daily checks, and managing various treatment processes under the supervision of a Lead Operator or Plant Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Perform startup, shutdown, and daily operating checks of the treatment plant.
• Operate and maintain specialized equipment including pumps, motors, chlorinators, and chemical preparation systems.
• Regulate the flow of wastewater and sludge through treatment processes.
• Monitor storage tank levels and pump station indicators.
• Inspect the plant as scheduled and record data and issues in the daily log.
• Perform routine preventative maintenance on plant equipment and grounds, including cleaning and repairs.
• Load and unload chemicals used at the treatment plant.
• Monitor flow, pressures, and chemical feeds.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience in water/wastewater treatment operations or related field.
• Knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding water treatment.
• Ability to operate and maintain specialized equipment and machinery.
