About The Position

Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our team as a Wastewater Maintenance Supervisor. This is an excellent opportunity for a professional with strong leadership skills, technical knowledge, and the ability to effectively supervise employees while promoting a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence within an industrial wastewater environment. If you have extensive experience in industrial maintenance and repair, including pumps, compressors, blowers, plumbing, pipe fitting, and preventative maintenance programs. The ideal candidate will be a team-oriented leader who can support and develop employees, provide technical guidance, and help ensure equipment and operations are performed safely and efficiently each day. Requirements

  • Eight years of journey-level experience in the water and wastewater industry, INCLUDING two years of lead or supervisory experience (which may be concurrent with required technical experience).
  • Completion of an industry-recognized apprenticeship or accredited university job training program in the water and wastewater industry may substitute for two years of the above experience.
  • Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.
  • OR: Five years of experience with Pima County in a Wastewater Heavy-Duty Maintenance Mechanic or related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment, INCLUDING two years of lead or supervisory experience (which may be concurrent with required technical experience).
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination.
  • Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.
  • The County requires pre-employment background checks.
  • Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
  • Some positions may require satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems.

  • All positions require sufficient body flexibility, mobility, stamina, and balance to allow for standing, walking, sitting, grasping and manipulation of objects, frequent bending, stooping, reaching, climbing stairs, and ladders.
  • All positions require regular or occasional crawling, kneeling, squatting, reaching overhead, lifting/carrying objects up to fifty pounds, pushing and pulling of objects up to seventy-five pounds, and the ability to properly don and off fall protection to enter and work in confined spaces.
  • Essential to this position is corrected or sufficient vision; the ability to see, read, and interpret written information, manuals, gauges, etc., including distinguishing various colors.
  • Also essential to this position is corrected or sufficient hearing; the ability to hear and comprehend voice communications in-person, over a radio, and phone, and to hear operating equipment.
  • Action Activity - bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, reaching, squatting, stooping; Motion Activity - grasping; Hearing Activity - in noisy areas, on a radio, behind themselves, equipment alarms; Speaking Activity - in person, on the phone, on a radio; Vision - operate motor vehicle, operate forklift/power industrial equipment, distinguish colors.
  • Frequently required to lift, push or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • All positions require the operation of machinery, powered industrial equipment, and motor vehicles.
  • All positions require outdoor work, including during inclement and hot weather, working in confined spaces, working in high places, working with loud noises, walking on uneven surfaces, and exposure to waterborne pathogens/agents, hazardous materials and gases, water hazards and wet/slippery surfaces, odors, fumes, humidity, dirt, dust, traffic hazards, venomous pests, and electric arc flash potential.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum six (6) years experience in industrial mechanical equipment, performing repairs and routine maintenance of industrial pumping systems, deep well turbine pumps, positive displacement pumps, submersible pumps, centrifugal pumps, booster pumps, gear boxes, plumbing, pipe fitting, and compressor/blower maintenance.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience supervising employees, providing specialized and advanced maintenance, repair, diagnosis, or troubleshooting, construction, fabrication, on-the-job training, and preventative maintenance.
  • Minimum (2) years experience using an industrial Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, and Visio).

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and directs maintenance operations, including inspection, repair, servicing, and preventative maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and systems to ensure reliability and optimal performance.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates maintenance activities and projects, including integration with wastewater facility operations and use of computerized work order systems.
  • Leads and oversees skilled fabrication, modification, and installation of equipment, systems, and facility components based on technical drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • Performs and directs quality control analysis, diagnostics, and corrective actions for equipment, instrumentation, and process control systems.
  • Manages work-unit resources, including budgeting, procurement activities, inventory control, and coordination with warehousing functions.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates staff, including development of employee plans, performance appraisals, technical skills training, and enforcement of safety standards and procedures.
  • Coordinates activities with internal work-units, external agencies, and contractors to optimize resource use and minimize service disruptions.
  • Monitors and evaluates contractor performance, including compliance with specifications and quality of goods and services provided.
  • Assists management in development of Requests for Bids, capital improvements, Operation and Maintenance projects, pertinent provisions in contracts, and bid proposal evaluations in area of own expertise and responsibility.
  • Ensures proper handling, storage, use, and disposal of hazardous materials and enforces safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports on maintenance activities, equipment usage, service history, and operational performance.
  • Prepares cost estimates, technical sketches, and documentation for maintenance, repairs, and special projects based on engineering plans and field assessments.
  • Inspects, approves, and certifies completed work while ensuring accountability and security of tools, equipment, and materials, particularly in sensitive or regulated environments.
