About the position

The University of Southern Mississippi is seeking a full-time, non-tenure track Visiting Instructor or Assistant Teaching Professor of Biological Sciences at the Gulf Park campus, starting January 2025. The role involves teaching undergraduate courses in biology and microbiology, mentoring teaching assistants, and participating in various academic activities.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 12 semester credit hours of freshman introductory majors and non-majors courses and laboratories.
  • Mentor teaching assistants in laboratories.
  • Collect and report assessment data.
  • Participate in appropriate committees and recruitment activities.
  • Teach online classes as needed.
  • Participate in student advisement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in biological sciences for Instructor rank or a doctoral degree in biological sciences for Assistant Teaching Professor rank.
  • Ability to teach face-to-face two-semester general biology majors and non-majors courses and their accompanying laboratories.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to teach courses in microbiology.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in biological sciences or closely related field.
  • Prior higher education teaching experience.
  • Proficiency with the Canvas Learning Management platform.
  • Demonstrated success in integrating new technologies into the learning process.
