About The Position

This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and any future vacancies. The anticipated life of the employment list is six months. Current vacancies are with the District Attorney's Office located in the Visalia Courthouse and Porterville. The anticipated life of the list is six months.

Requirements

  • Completion of two (2) years of college, including 15 units of criminal law, sociology, or related area.
  • Level I: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in interviewing or obtaining information in fields similar to the criminal justice system.
  • Level II/III: One (1) year of experience in a position equivalent to Victim Witness Worker I in Tulare County.
  • Knowledge of: Interviewing, counseling, and recordkeeping techniques.
  • Knowledge of: The Criminal Justice System in order to assist victims.
  • Knowledge of: Public and private agency resources available to victims, and to the Victim Witness Program.
  • Knowledge of: Standard office practices and procedures.
  • Skill/Ability to: Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers.
  • Skill/Ability to: Operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment.
  • Skill/Ability to: Interview and counsel effectively in a variety of crisis situations and settings.
  • Skill/Ability to: Accurately gather, record, and correctly evaluate data necessary for the determination of eligibility for benefits in the Victim Witness Program.
  • Skill/Ability to: Elicit information from and give information to applicants in difficult circumstances involving emotional disturbance.
  • Skill/Ability to: Correctly interpret rules and regulations regarding eligibility for the Victim Witness Program.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Provide victim assistance services to a broad base of the public via self-initiated activities.
  • Contact public departments and private agencies to inform them of Victim Witness Program and to solicit their involvement as a referral agency.
  • Maintain working relationships with other referral departments and agencies.
  • Give presentations to law enforcement agencies and civic groups to explain the Victim Witness Program.
  • Represent the department in the absence of superiors.
  • Assist in preparing complex statistical reports and may participate in special research projects.
  • Recruit volunteers and interns; help develop, oversee, and implement training plans for volunteers, interns, and new employees; provide input to supervisory staff regarding volunteer, intern, and staff assignments/performance; prioritize and assign staff working supervisor's absence.
  • Provide services to victims on after-hours calls for assistance at Child Abuse Response Team interviews.
