About the position

The Vice President for Research and Economic Development (VPRED) at Georgia State University (GSU) is a senior leadership role responsible for guiding the university's research mission and strategic planning. The VPRED will oversee a budget of $12.2 million and manage a team of 13 direct reports, contributing to the university's growth in research and scholarship. This position requires a dynamic leader who can inspire faculty and staff, promote research opportunities, and ensure compliance with ethical research practices.

Responsibilities

  • Guide the university's scholarly mission and research-related strategic planning.
  • Anticipate and promote research opportunities for faculty.
  • Uphold an institutional environment that fosters excellence in research, creative activity, and scholarship.
  • Ensure that policies, systems, and processes are seamless and easy to understand.
  • Develop financial strategies that support and benefit research.
  • Support the dissemination and commercialization of discoveries.
  • Assure legal compliance with proper and ethical research practices.
  • Represent the university to local, regional, and national constituencies, including federal and other funding agencies.
  • Manage resources associated with the Office of the Vice President of Research and Economic Development.

Requirements

  • Earned doctoral degree.
  • Relevant administrative and leadership experience in a research-intensive university.
  • Record of distinguished scholarship and track record of research activity.
  • Evidence of leadership of a large interdisciplinary university or research center.
  • Experience in supporting technology transfer, commercialization, and industry partnerships.
  • Understanding of federal funding mechanisms, advocacy, and compliance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in infrastructure development with multiple constituencies.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate a diverse faculty and staff.
