About the position

The Veterinary Shelter Nurse is responsible for assisting veterinarians and shelter staff in providing veterinary care to animals in a shelter environment. This role involves a variety of tasks including medical examinations, vaccinations, patient monitoring, and maintaining a clean and safe environment for the animals. The nurse will also communicate with clients and staff, ensuring the well-being of the animals and adherence to established protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate exam findings and provide direct support to the veterinarian and clients.
  • Complete thorough medical examinations working with veterinarians and nursing assistants.
  • Read and interpret medical records to determine vaccination status and medication needs.
  • Perform and assist with vaccinations of non-fractious and fractious or fearful animals upon intake.
  • Examine and care for sick shelter animals, including cage cleaning, exercising, feeding, and observing animals for illness.
  • Maintain clinic equipment and assist in maintaining healthy, safe, and sanitary facilities for the animals.
  • Perform and assist with euthanasia as needed.
  • Perform, read, and interpret laboratory tests and complete forms for out-of-house laboratory.
  • Admit and release animals in a responsive and courteous manner, managing recordkeeping effectively.
  • Work cooperatively with staff and volunteers to ensure established procedures and policies are followed.
  • Treat people and animals with respect and contribute to effective teamwork.
  • Assist in various departments as needed, including public clinic and surgery.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required; some college or trade school preferred.
  • Minimum of three years experience in the veterinary field as a veterinary assistant or technician preferred.
  • Proficient in using computers and familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of Pet Point Animal Management System and Cornerstone software is a plus.
  • Ability to problem solve and work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Comfortable working with animals of unknown disposition and those with medical issues.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with veterinary nursing assistant duties.
  • Knowledge of veterinary pharmacology and medical terminology.
  • Experience in client communication and patient care.
