About the position

The Veterans Home RN is an important and valuable member of the South Dakota Veterans Home by "taking care of America's Heroes" by providing professional nursing services that require the application of basic nursing principles, practices, and techniques that follow established healthcare procedures and standards. Successful candidates work in a long-term care setting at the South Dakota State Veterans Home and operate in a patient care environment where the focus is on the healthcare of individuals. Pay rate and classification level will be determined by a combination of education and experience. Responsibilities in the higher classification will be similar; however, complexity and oversight may change. Potential of reduced tuition for continuing education and some flexibility of shift may be available. Onsite, low-cost housing may be available. The cost is dependent on square footage.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional nursing services in a long-term care setting.
  • Apply basic nursing principles, practices, and techniques according to established healthcare procedures and standards.
  • Maintain patient records and follow instructions accurately.
  • Operate a variety of medical equipment and make reports on observations.
  • Apply general nursing techniques and practices while maintaining a helpful and sympathetic attitude toward patients.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and staff.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed and able to work as a registered nurse in South Dakota.
  • Registered Nurse License and associate degree, bachelor degree, or 3-year diploma required.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practices, and recent developments in the field of professional nursing applicable to the area of assignment.
  • Ability to keep records, follow instructions, and operate medical equipment.
