About The Position

The position of Herpetofauna manager requires the UWSP student employee to work in conjunction with the UWSP Herpetology Society to care for and showcase the living animals in their collection. The position is flexible and requires about 10 -15 hours of time per week. Pay is $12.00/hr. and is for a full one-year term. Must be able to work summers, holidays, weekends and during winter and spring breaks, which is scheduled and shared between four managers. Two managers are tasked with caring for animals & the facility (mostly snakes and lizards) in TNR 433 and two managers are tasked with care (mostly turtles and aquatics) in TNR 130/Vive display case. Positions begin during finals week each fall and spring. Those hired in the spring have terms that begin spring finals week in May and continue into the last week of classes the following May. Those hired in the fall term have terms that begin finals week in December and continue until the last week of classes the following December. Two new managers are hired each fall and spring.

Requirements

  • Must be a current UWSP student.
  • Must be able to work summers, holidays, weekends and during winter and spring breaks.
  • Must have a vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Comfortable and safely able to handle several species of reptiles and amphibians.
  • Complete and file daily care sheets for each animal.
  • Purchase food, enrichment items, welfare items and other lab needs within a budget as provided through the SGA.
  • Have a vehicle and able to provide transportation for an animal to get to Veterinary appointments.
  • Understand Animal care regulations and keep the lab, care items, and animal enclosures clean.
  • Review volunteer applications, select volunteers from a group of applicants, train volunteers, schedule volunteers, and discipline as necessary to ensure standard animal care.
  • Work well with a team and meet weekly for team meetings.
  • Feed, water, mist, or soak animals, understand individual nutritional needs, provide UVB exposure and proper lighting, heating and humidity requirements.
  • Be responsible and reliable.
