About the position

The Utility Worker position within PG&E's Gas Operations is an entry-level role focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to customers. This position is represented by IBEW Local 1245, which has a long history of advocating for employees at PG&E. The role is primarily outdoor-based, requiring individuals to work in various weather conditions while adhering to safety standards and procedures. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to safety and teamwork, following the guidance of journeymen, crew leads, and supervisors. The position involves physical labor, including the use of hand tools and portable power tools, and may require the operation of light-duty trucks and trailers. As part of the Gas Transmission and Distribution team, Utility Workers will assist in construction and maintenance tasks, perform routine production duties such as leak surveys, and contribute to Gas Safety Excellence goals. The role requires the ability to lift and maneuver heavy objects, work extended hours, and maintain a valid driver's license. Successful candidates will undergo a Utility Worker Training course lasting approximately 15 business days during their initial weeks of employment. Responsibilities

  • Work safely at all times as defined by PG&E's safety standards and procedures.
  • Follow the direction of their journeyman, crew lead and/or supervisor at all times.
  • Read and comply with all required company standards and procedures.
  • Work in a team environment.
  • Pass Post Offer Physical Assessment.
  • Contribute toward Gas Safety Excellence goals by improving safety, reliability and affordability for one or more asset families and one or more life cycles.
  • Assist in construction and maintenance and other miscellaneous semi-skilled work.
  • Use hand tools, portable power tools, pavement breakers, spaders, tampers or compactors for work not requiring precision under the direction of a Crew Leader.
  • Perform routine production Locate and Mark duties, routine production Leak Survey duties, perform pipe to soil readings, and Atmospheric Corrosion Surveys when working alone and Operator Qualified.
  • Perform traffic control functions under the direction of a Gas Crew Leader.
  • Maintain a commercial driver's license with a tank endorsement when qualified.
  • Assess situations and make field conditions safe for Gas Pipeline Operations and Maintenance Workgroup when qualified.
  • Operate light duty trucks and associated trailers.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a High School diploma or GED.
  • Must be able to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Must have qualified on the Physical Test Battery (PTB) exam and Work Orientation Inventory Test (WOI) prior to applying for the position (for internal PG&E employees).
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver up to 90 pounds.
  • Must pass Utility Worker Training course, which takes place for approx. 15 business days, during the first three weeks of employment.
  • Ability to work extended hours to include nights, weekends and holidays when required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License (or higher) by Day 1 of hire.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather extremes.
  • Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions.
  • Ability to travel and transfer to a new headquarter upon request at any time.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in construction such as Underground Utility, Trenching Equipment, Welding, Carpentry, Plumbing, Pipefitting, Farm Ranch Hand and/or Landscaping.
  • Previous Military experience.
  • Previous Locate and Mark experience at PG&E.
  • Graduation from a PowerPathway® Program is preferred.
  • Current or past work experience with PG&E and/or Hiring Hall.
  • Preference for applicants who live within 50 miles of the headquarter location.
