About the position

The Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Directorate (CSAID) at Fermilab invites applications for the USCMS Tier 1 Facility Manager. The position will be hired as an Application Physicist II with general characteristics listed below. The U.S. CMS facility is hosted by CSAID at Fermilab to provide computing resources and infrastructure services for the U.S. CMS collaboration to achieve their physics goals and provide contributions to the world-wide distributed computing infrastructure of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment (CMS) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. The selected candidate will organize the provisioning and operation of computing resources and infrastructure services as directed by the U.S. CMS Software & Computing Operations Program through CSAID and will receive funds from U.S. CMS Software & Computing Operations Program for effort and computing hardware. The selected candidate will be a member of CSAID and work through the management structure of CSAID to organize hardware purchases, and coordinate hardware maintenance and service deployment and operation. The successful candidate will receive guidance from the U.S. CMS Software & Computing Operations Program about the required performance and reliability of the deployed hardware, and which services are needed and at what performance to support the U.S. CMS community and the CMS experiment at large. The selected candidate will be responsible for the availability and reliability of the facility as monitored by the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG).

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating the operation of the U.S. CMS Facility at Fermilab through the CSAID management and operations hierarchy.
  • Organizing the provisioning and operation of computing resources and infrastructure services as directed by the U.S. CMS Software & Computing Operations Program.
  • Responsible for the availability and reliability of the facility as monitored by the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG).
  • Organizing the deployment of computing resources as requested by the U.S. CMS Software and Computing Operations Program in coordination with CSAID.
  • Planning the hardware purchases for the next 2-3 years with guidance from the U.S. CMS Software & Computing Operations Program.
  • Isolating and defining problems, producing effective solutions and evaluating results.
  • Setting up and monitoring tests and contributing to the operation of facilities ensuring efficient functioning and conformance with safety specifications and regulations.
  • Providing technical advice to Technicians and other scientific professionals regarding the technical aspects of the research.
  • Using advanced application of modeling and simulation tools.
  • Preparing technical reports and papers on research and development activities.
  • Participating on Laboratory reviews and Safety Committees.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Abiding by and being responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

Requirements

  • PhD in physics or related technical discipline.
  • 6+ years of post-doctoral experience.
