About the position

The Principal Data Scientist in the Data Science team at Sam's Club will lead AI explorations, research, and the creation of algorithmic solutions to enhance member experiences across various shopping interactions. This role involves overseeing the implementation of Machine Learning products, guiding a scrum team, and collaborating with Product Managers and Technologists to scale ML/AI solutions. The position offers an opportunity to integrate retail knowledge with machine learning to drive significant growth and innovation in ad relevancy and ranking.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of Data Scientists and Engineers focused on backend software infrastructure for AI/ML solutions.
  • Collaborate with Product and engineering leaders to drive innovations in discovery experiences through insights and machine learning prototypes.
  • Execute the full life cycle of projects, including project planning, data collection, model prototyping, and deployment.
  • Build MLOps framework to continuously create, build, and deploy data science algorithms.

Requirements

  • Experience in the development of large-scale production systems.
  • Knowledge of Search, Ads, information retrieval, and ranking systems.
  • 3+ years of experience in applied machine learning with familiarity in algorithms like Collaborative Filtering, Matrix Factorization, and Deep Neural Networks.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, R, or Scala.
  • Experience with Machine Learning Software like Tensorflow, Pytorch, or Scikit-Learn.
  • Experience with cloud environments such as Azure or Google Cloud.
  • Solid MLOps practices including design documentation and source code control (git).
  • Experience with agile methodologies and project management tools like JIRA.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or related fields.
  • Publications or active peer reviewer in related journals or conferences.
  • Knowledge of accessibility best practices and WCAG 2.2 AA standards.
