About the position

The University Police Officer 1 (UPO1) at SUNY Geneseo is responsible for enforcing New York State and local laws, as well as the student code of conduct on campus. This role involves performing a full range of professional police duties, including assisting other law enforcement agencies, collecting evidence, and educating the campus community on safety issues. The position requires working on a rotational shift that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Patrol assigned area on foot, bicycle, or patrol vehicle to deter criminal activity and respond to calls for service.
• Enforce vehicle and traffic laws, direct traffic, and control crowds during events.
• Receive and interpret incoming communications, dispatch officers, and issue temporary parking permits.
• Deliver in-service training and community educational programs, and maintain certification in various training areas.
• Report to the scene of crimes or disturbances, administer first aid, and conduct initial investigations.
• Prepare reports, logs, and records detailing activities related to criminal or unusual behavior.

Requirements

• Permanent appointment in a University Police Officer 1 (UPO1), SG-14 classified position; OR reachable on the current New York State Civil Service canvass list for SUNY Geneseo; OR eligible via transfer.
• Proof of completing the physical agility test.
• Meet established physical and medical requirements for the position.
• Possession of a valid unrestricted New York State driver's license.
• Legally eligible to carry a firearm.
• Completed all requirements for certification as a police officer in New York State.
